Use Jonah 3 to guide your prayer over Mosul-
Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
Please pray for a spirit of repentance to fall upon Nineveh once more! As happened in Nineveh in the days of Jonah, may we see such repentance again in this city! (The picture below is of the old wall of Nineveh- it is estimated to be about 3,000 years old!)
Those that persecute, oppress, and cause harm to others
There are several different groups of peoples in and around Mosul known for oppressing, persecuting, and harming others- whether for political reasons, religious reasons, gender reasons, reasons of power, or other.
Pray for many Saul-like hearts in Mosul to be brought to repentance and faith in You. And pray for many Ananias-like believers to openly receive those who were staunchly opposed to the Gospel into fellowship.
“So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, ’Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 9:17)
Kindness
May God reveal the surpassing riches of His grace and kindness toward the people of Mosul in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:7).
Pray for believers in Mosul to live with great boldness, great faith, and great love during this Ramadan. May the Lord increase faith in the hearts of believers and workers throughout the city of Mosul.
